Poker Glossary

Action

The gambler’s turn to act in the round of betting.

Ante

The forced bet made by all the players before the cards deal.

All-In

Burn

Button

Buy-in

Call

To match preceding bet or raise.

Calling station

The poker player that always calls and rarely bets and raises.

Check

To skip the turn to make bet not wagering any sum into the pot. It is permitted to check only in case the bet hasn’t been posted before.

Connector

The starting hand that has two or more cards in sequence.

Dead money

Money posted to the pot by gambler that is not in the game.

 

Draw

The poker hand that may be very strong when some particular cards are dealt on the board.

Draw dead

The hand which has very low probabilities to win in any case.

Fast play

Aggressive poker play with lots of raises and bets.

Fish

Bad poker player.

Flop

First community cards.

Freeroll

The poker tournaments without the buy-ins.

Gutshot straight

Not complete straight hand that needs one particular card to appear.

Heads-up

The game or pot with two players.

Kicker

The unpaired card in the hand which is used to break tie.

Maniac

Highly aggressive player which always raises and bluffs.

Muck

The discards of poker player that left the game.

Monster

Very high poker hand.

No-Limit

Betting structure which permits the poker players to wager any amount.

Off suit

The starting poker hand which contains two cards from the different suit.

Out

The cards left in deck that can help to form strong hand.

Play the board

To use all community cards to make the poker hand.

Pot limit

The poker betting structure that allows players to wager and bet up to the size of whole pot.

Quads

The same as Four of a Kind.

Rainbow

The flop cards of the different suit.

Re-buy

To buy some more poker chips during the game not leaving the game.

Ring Game

Cash game.

River

Last community card.

Satellite

The kind of poker tournament which is held as the entering game for the bigger poker tournament.

Showdown

The end of any poker game when the gamblers shows the hands and the winner is awarded.

Side pot

The pot formed when several players make all-in with the different amounts of chips.

Small blind

The forced bet made by the first player after the button. The size of small blind bet is the half of big blind amount.

Split pot

The pot that is divided between the poker player with the hands with the same strength.

Suited

The starting hand which has the cards with the same suit.

Tilt

To lose patience in the game as a result of many losses and start making errors.

Turn

The fourth poker community card on the board.

Wheel

The lowest straight from ace to five. And Straight is the hand which contains five unsuited cards in succession.
