In poker, players form sets of five playing cards, called hands, according to the rules of the game. Each hand has a rank, which is compared against the ranks of other hands participating in the showdown to decide who wins the pot. In high games, like Texas hold 'em and seven-card stud, the highest-ranking hands win.In low games, like razz, the lowest-ranking hands win.

With the marginal hands you should be playing for small pots. With small hands you can win very large pots without risking large losses yourself. This is one of the reasons you will see hands such as this being played into raises by the professionals at high-stakes poker. The middle hand example is designed to make you aware of poorly placed bets and dark tunnel bluffs.

The more rarely a hand occurs, the higher it stands in the poker hand rankings. The odds against a royal flush, for example, are nearly 31,000-to-1, making it the rarest and strongest hand in poker. When two hands of the same strength go head-to-head, the winner is determined by which hand holds the stronger kicker.

Notice that this is now facing a 3x open as opposed to a 2.5x open. Many players open a little smaller from the BTN compared to other positions. It’s important to keep in mind that our defending frequency is heavily affected by the open-raise sizing our opponents use. The larger they make it, the less often we should be defending.

I’d start by shoving hands that have trouble post-flop such as small pairs and A-x hands. Shove some other hands that make a small profit. I’d also probably select a few hands of each category, such as 8-6s and K-9o, and jam those as well to ensure that I’m not too easily readable. Isolate with a relatively small range.

A small hand is a hand you don't want to play a big pot with; As a general rule you should avoid playing for stacks with one-pair type hands. If you are called you're normally behind. So when you have a hand like top pair you should exercise pot control. Remember you are in charge of the hands you play!

This strategy makes use of a reduced cold-calling range without removing it entirely. Hands like 77-TT nearly always play better as cold-calls but it would be incorrect to purely defend these hands by calling. We’d be playing very face up if our opponent knew that we always had 77-TT when we cold-call.

You slowly remove hands from his range as the hand progresses until you're left with a small range of his likely holdings. Put your opponent on a range. If you can narrow down his holdings even a little bit, you'll be better able to suit your play to his.

As we established before, we often need very little raw equity to call a small blind raise – 20.4% against a minraise, 25.4% against a 2.5x, 28.9% against a 3x (10% antes, 9-handed table). This is what warrants us to call with a lot of hands, but you also have to understand that we really aren’t meant to win a whole lot of these pots.
