Two cards, known as hole cards, are dealt face down to each player, and then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages. The stages consist of a series of three cards ("the flop"), later an additional single card ("the turn" or "fourth street"), and a final card ("the river" or "fifth street").

In fact, most players probably think this is how the cards are dealt. This is called “parallel” instead of “serial.”. In this type of deal, cards 6 through 10 would be stacked behind the initial 5 cards you’re dealt. If you discarded card #2 in your hand, you’d get card #7 instead of card #6.

Deal 5 cards to each player. Begin by dealing 1 card face down to the player to your left and continuing around the table dealing cards 1 at a time until every player has 5 cards. This is a game in which players are dealt a full hand which remains hidden and is improved by replacing cards. 2

In Stud Poker, some of the cards are dealt face up as the betting progresses, so that all of the other players get to see a part of each player's hands. Unless the host, or the rule of a club, has already established the game, the players should first decide what form of Poker they will play.

Typically, the player to the right of the dealer collects together all the cards from the previous hand and squares the deck. Next, the current poker dealer shuffles the cards at least four times. The deck is then passed to the player seated to their immediate left to cut the deck once.

In Texas Hold'em, the most popular poker variant, the objective is to use your private, hole cards, the two face-down cards you are initially dealt by the dealer, and combine them with the community cards dealt face-up on the table to form the strongest hand of 5 cards. These face-up, community cards, are dealt in stages as follows:

In poker games played in cardrooms, the community cards are dealt in a row in the middle of the table and are called the board. In many home games, though, the community cards might be dealt into a special pattern like a cross or a 3 X 3 grid.

Before any cards are dealt in poker, players must pay attention to who is deemed the ‘button’, or the dealer. The purpose of the button is to determine where the action starts each round, which should be with the player to the left of the button who is called the ‘big blind’.

Stud poker Cards are dealt in a prearranged combination of face-down and face-up rounds, or streets, with a round of betting following each. This is the next-oldest family; as poker progressed from three to five-card hands, they were often dealt one card at a time, either face-down or face-up, with a betting round between each.
