When should you call in poker? For beginners and casual players, it's best to fold all low-value cards that can't be used to make a straight e.g. 2-7 or a face card with a low kicker e.g. J-3. If you are dealt a hand like A-K or K-K, it's sometimes worth calling the big blind to get a look at the flop.

Call in poker means that you’re matching the bet of the player moving before you. If your opponent bets $2, calling means that you also need to place $2 before proceeding. If the bet is higher than the total chips you have on the table, you need to bet all your chips, or what we know as all-in.

You could flat-call here. But a re-raise puts you in a much better position, because your opponent’s reaction will tell you something about what he’s holding. Let’s say you raise to $7 and your opponent re-raises to anywhere between $20 and $30 (a sensible re-raise size).

It may hence often be correct to call our overpair vs a flop jam, but to consider folding our overpair at some point before the river after our opponent utilises the small flop-raise line. Of course, the GTO style answer is somewhat different. According to GTO poker, we should basically never fold overpairs in 3bet pots with 100bb effective stacks.
