The bank delays in posting the refund to your account because they are making interest off that money while it sits in their bank account. They will delay for the maximum amount of time allowed by law so they can make the maximum amount of interest on the money before giving it to you.

What happens if you get a refund on a credit card with no balance?
There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to credit card refunds. That's because refunds are often processed at the mercy of the merchant. Many will issue refunds immediately, ensuring that the credit shows up in the customer's account a few days later. However, other merchants take their time, electing to process refunds several weeks later.

Simple Answer: Even when merchant immediately processes a refund on your credit card, the bank has up to a certain number of days (usually 5-7) to process that refund and put it on your credit card account. The bank delays in posting the refund to your account because they are making interest off that money while it sits in their bank account.

One of the key reasons that a credit card refund takes as long as it does is the number of steps involved in the refund process. When you initiate a refund, as when you return merchandise to a store, the seller requests a refund by beginning a new transaction request on the credit card network.

In some cases, according to Mint.com, merchants take their time or fail to issue prompt refunds to force you to file a dispute with your credit card company. That process can add months to the refund time.

The easy one: Merchants don’t have as much motivation to process a refund as they do to process a purchase that will put money in their pockets. ADVERTISEMENT. The second reason: It’s a bit of an illusion. When you make a purchase and your card is swiped, it sends a temporary authorization or hold to your bank.

A delayed refund can, however, start to affect your credit score if it means you'll maintain a higher credit utilization ratio for a longer period of time while you wait. A large purchase might affect your credit utilization ratio—the amount of available credit you have divided by your total available credit—which, in turn, affects your credit score.

most of the online website use a merchant who proved the payment gateway. so this merchant connect the card holders bank and the online website company’s bank. the process is much smoother when you charge but it takes time to get a refund. even the company doesn’t get the money immediately to their account. it takes few days for the merchant to debit the money.

Note that a credit card refund is different from a billing dispute. A refund is when you return an item to the merchant to have them credit the money back to your account. A billing dispute is for when you didn't receive the merchandise you charged to your account or your account was charged for something you didn't purchase.

Short answer: as with most things, if you follow the money and use reasoning you’ll see the answer. So in this case it takes longer to refund because the parties involved either want to make more profit and protect themselves against losses. Long answer: Technically speaking credit card processors put a hold on your credit card instantly.
